In a recent blog, I wrote about the shift to disaggregation in today?s web-scale data centers. I explained that disaggregation separates the switch into different ?layers,? including the operating system, so that you can change out a layer without affecting the others. This allows you to exploit multiple purchasing sources rather than having to buy everything from a single vendor.
Thinking in terms of layers of a disaggregated switch stack may bring to mind Software-defined Networking (SDN), which decouples the network control plane (software) in the switch from the forwarding plane ? the physical infrastructure that forwards data to its destination. But while disaggregation and SDN certainly can support each other, they?re two different things.
