The metamorphosis of SDN ? observations from Interop Las Vegas 2015

by Hamid Lalani, HP Networking SDN GPLM

Hamid Lalani.jpgIt?s been an interesting couple of days here at Interop in the Mandalay Bay convention center in Las Vegas. The show has been really quite vibrant. One thing that has stood out for me is how Software-defined Networking ? the term and the value proposition it implies ? has moved from being perceived as a rather high-level, over-hyped idea, to being a fundamental reality. Which is where it actually belongs. The realization that SDN is not just some cool theory but rather a fundamental network architectural transformation is now becoming a mainstream view.

Hot from Interop: Is your mobile strategy pinned to smart phones? You?re way behind!

By Christine Sto-Domingo, Enterprise Group Event Strategist, HP Networking

End of another amazing day at Interop Las Vegas. Something I just had to share: the 3 gigantic screens of the HPIMG_1521.JPG Digital Wall sprawled in the corridor of the Mandalay bay. If you?re coming from the hotel you?ll have seen them ? you can hardly miss them! ? as you head into the conference. We?re showcasing some great customer reference images, including one about DreamWorks that?s also included in the HP booth. I?ve noticed that this one really makes people stop and stare!

Big event for me today was a keynote panel featuring Dominic Wilde, VP of Marketing and Global Product Line Management for HP Networking, along with leaders from La Quinta Inns and Gilt Group. Intriguing title of the panel: ?Smartphones? You're Way Behind.? Here?s my take on some of the great points that the panel covered:

HP announces 5400R v3 switch to satisfy businesses? hunger for mobility

By Sue Gillespie, Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

As the use of mobile devices increases in the workplace, so do the demands on your network. These devices require the same set of network services, and in some cases more services, than our traditional stationary desktops. Add to that the increased bandwidth demands of applications like voice, video and collaboration tools ? and let?s just say it?s enough to keep CIOs and network administrators burning the midnight oil.

Keeping your network operating at a level that fully supports productivity and business advantage is a full-time challenge. At HP we?ve been working to help you meet that challenge through our campus networking line of products and solutions. We?re excited about our latest product announcement in this area, one that we think represents another giant step forward.

The HP 5400R Switch Series has already won accolades, and today we expanded this line with the introduction of ten new v3 switching modules.

A big milestone on the road to the mobile-ready workplace

By Gladys Alegre-Kimura, Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

Gladys Alegre Kimura.jpgIs the bring-your-own-device crisis finally over? I almost wanted to say ?the war on BYOD,? and that might not have been overstating it, given the defensive posture that many IT organizations adopted in the early stages of the great shift to mobility. Things have moved on, though, as businesses have realized the tremendous gains in productivity that are there for the taking with a well thought-out strategy. Forward-looking network leaders are embracing BYOD and thinking in terms of wireless-first. They?re looking down the road toward the next set of challenges (like the coming wave of wearables ? see my previous blog), and they?re investigating the many advantages of Software-defined Networking (SDN).

New HP offerings, announced today at Interop, will enable companies to take a huge step forward on the road to the mobile-centric enterprise.

Hot from Interop Las Vegas: Taking another look at the wired network

By Christine Sto-Domingo, Enterprise Group Event Strategist, HP Networking

I?m grabbing a few moments to update my reports from the floor at Interop Las Vegas 2015, this time about a vendor tech session yesterday that featured Michael Dickman, VP for Global Product Line Management, HP Networking. Title: Why you need smart wired infrastructure when upgrading your wireless network to Wave 2. I?d been looking forward to this one and learning more about why the new campus networking calls for, as the session abstract puts it, ?architecting the campus for mobility first, requiring a smart access layer that embeds security, visibility and optimization into the infrastructure.?

Hmmm ? mobility first and a smart wired network? I was intrigued.
