Network aggregation: Where does SDN fit in?

By Ahmad Zamer, Sr. Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

Ahmed Zamer.pngIn a recent blog, I wrote about the shift to disaggregation in today?s web-scale data centers. I explained that disaggregation separates the switch into different ?layers,? including the operating system, so that you can change out a layer without affecting the others. This allows you to exploit multiple purchasing sources rather than having to buy everything from a single vendor.

Thinking in terms of layers of a disaggregated switch stack may bring to mind Software-defined Networking (SDN), which decouples the network control plane (software) in the switch from the forwarding plane ? the physical infrastructure that forwards data to its destination. But while disaggregation and SDN certainly can support each other, they?re two different things.

Introducing the HP Networking K-12 Education Solution: 3 standout features for your school

By Alex Zuo, Product Manager for Education Solutions, HP Networking

Alex Zuo.jpgNo matter whether the economy?s in good shape or bad, K-12 education is always a priority. But most K-12 schools today are facing big challenges to meet the requirements of Common Core State Standards and one-to-one computing. Fifty-four percent of K-12 schools cite budget constraints as their No.1 challenge, according to the 2015 IT Leadership Survey Report by COSN. And more than 70 percent report they?re not fully prepared to provide online assessments because of the difficulties posed by the Internet environment.

We, the HP Networking Global Vertical Solutions team, investigated these big challenges, identified typical use scenarios, and built a specific solution for K-12 customers. We call it the HP Networking Digital Classroom (check out this business white paper).

Network disaggregation: where does ?white box? come in?

By Ahmad Zamer, Sr. Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

Ahmad ZamerBuying an off-the-shelf white box is a little like buying an assemble-it-yourself desk or table from Ikea. It?s great in concept, but can be tricky in the execution. Here are some other things you need to consider when it comes to scaling up your network infrastructure.

Network disaggregation: What it is, what it can do for your data center

By Ahmad Zamer, Sr. Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

Ahmed Zamer.pngThese days I find that I?m talking with more and more IT leaders who are curious about the value of network disaggregation and want to know more about how it could fit into their data center strategy. There are some misperceptions out there in the market, though, so let me give a bit of background on this huge shift that?s under way in today?s web-scale data centers.

Most of us are familiar with the traditional integrated model, in which a single vendor sells and supports the switch hardware, the operating system, the management and the tools that go on top of it. Since each layer largely relies on the layer below it, you can?t switch out a piece with one from another vendor.

Disaggregation flips this model on its side, so that each layer can be switched out without impacting the others. The benefit is that you can purchase the pieces for each layer ? including, importantly, the operating system ? from different vendors.

The future of the mobility-driven enterprise

New mobility architectures are speeding the transition to economical, totally wireless networks for campus and branch communications, and together with location-aware technologies and analytics they?re creating some truly eye-opening opportunities. There?s a great example in the video below, where Keerti Melkote, CTO of Aruba Networks, and Mark Carroll, VP and CTO of HP Networking, discuss locationing services at a stadium. Imagine being able to order a hot dog over your mobile phone, then getting a notification from the vendor when it's ready, together with directions from  your seat to the concession stand!
